Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring is a continuous monitoring of nerve and brain function during surgery or in the Intensive Care Unit. Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring obtains and interprets data from electrical activities in muscle or nerves.
There are special testing modalities, which can be used during surgery, as e.g. Electroencephalography (EEG), Electromyography (EMG) and Evoked Potentials (EP).
Intraoperative neuromonitoring allows a continuous monitoring of neural structures during brain and spine surgery. Thus, complications and damages to the nervous system can be avoided.
Intraoperative Neuromonitoring can be used in almost every kind of brain or spine surgeries. Surgeons often prefer Neuromonitoring during complex surgeries.
